Help Save Bike Share in California

On Wednesday, June 22, the Insurance Committee of the California Senate will vote on a bill that could jeopardize the operation of bike share systems across the state. Help protect California’s bike share systems by sending your senator a letter opposing the bill today.

Assembly Bill 371 requires micromobility operators, which includes bike share operators, to assume liability for damage and injury caused through no fault of their own. The law does not distinguish between the different types of micromobility systems and would equally apply to small, nonprofit bike share organizations. This additional regulation would make it difficult for many bike share systems to continue operating.

This new insurance requirement is wholly inappropriate for bike share systems in the United States and could inflict a fatal blow to dozens of programs that support the expansion of California’s bicycling community and create access to alternative modes of transportation for more residents.
